RE: We get fewer stations after connecting the converter????

We have one analog tv in the den that the d/w uses when she is on the tread mill. It uses rabbit ears and gets the major channels, although channel 2 is not always very good. I installed the A/D converter and it actually gets more digital channnels than we did analog channels and the quality of the picture is very much improved. I'm thinking of hooking it up to the roof antenna to extend it's range.

I've been going to the grocery store with

the D/W since she came down with cancer because she was unable to reach the higher shelves. Now she really no longer needs me (at the grocery store) but I have been doing this so long that it has developed a habit. I don't walk the aisles with her, but instead I buy a coffee and either read a book (there's a Starbucks in the grocery store) or just watch the people. What this is leading up to is that it is amazing what women wear (or don't wear) to the grocery store. I haven't seen so much flesh since....., well for a long time anyways. Is this a southern California thing or is it like this all over the country?

Do you find that you eat more when dining at

a buffet style restaurant versus a standard restaurant. The DW and I went out to dinner at Home Town Buffet last night and I noticed that I was eating more then I normally would in a regular restaurant (more items and second helpings). I seem to have this notion that I have to get my moneys worth and, consequently, I eat more. Since I'm trying to lose weight I guess that means that I'm going to have to stop eating at buffets.

Bright LED Signs...

Sunday night coming up the 405 from visiting our son and his family I noticed that there were quite a few of those electronic signs which use LEDs. They were very bright, a couple of them to the point that I had to avert my eyes. Some, while not overly bright, were programmed to catch your attention with moving figures and color changes. I found these to be as much of a safety hazard as the overly bright ones, drawing your attention, even briefly, away from the traffic. Now I just ignore the signs as much as possble. Is it just me or do others find these types of signs to be a potential hazard?

Has anyone ever had their milk

go bad while on a trip? We went on a short (4) day trip and when we returned and had breakfast the next day I found (the hard way) that our milk had soured. I kept the frig. on a high setting (7 of 9). We do not keep the milk in the door of the frig because it is not as cold as in the middle of the frig. and in spite of all this it went bad. The outside temp. was in the mid 90s, but we had the air conditioner on most of the day so that shouldn't have been a problem. We've not had this happen before and we've had several 3 month trips (though most of which were in cooler weather). Could it just have been that the milk was marginal to begin with, or maybe our frig. is just not a cold as it should be. Every thing felt very cold including the milk.

RE: I fried my brakes

bkick; I did have the truck's brakes checked and they we still very good, lots of pad life left. That's why I was wondering about the controller setting.

RE: Slide-Out Jacks/Stands - Yea or Nay?

Wow! I guess the consensus is not to use the stands. When I read the manual that came with our unit it said not to put anything under the slideout. So "no stand" vote for me too.

I fried my brakes

After we came back from Yosemite I took the 5er in because I thought it felt like the brakes were grabbing. The mechanic called me and said that I must have had the controller set to high because I fried the brake shoes. They were black with large, open cracks running length ways. It looked like a disaster waiting to happen. They had to change the shoes, the backing plates and the magnets. I've had this controller (a Tekonsha Sentinel) for several years and have not had this problem before. We've been doing a lot of mountain driving and I have set the controller a little higher because I want to be able to stop quickly in an emergency. Does anyone else set their controller higher for mountain driving? Should I not bother doing this?

I'm sure that I'm not the only one to be...

...blown away by the opening night at the Olympics. I feel sorry for the next country to hold the Olympics. As a contrast though I am some what upset over the pressure being put on Michael Phelps to win 8 gold metals. The guy is probably one of the best swimmers that we've sent to the Olympics, but to keep harping on winning so many gold metals in not doing him any favors.

Bought an D to A Converter for...

the not-so-old analog TV. This TV works off of a set of rabbit ears so I did not expect much of a reception, but I was pleasently suprised. We not only received more chanels but many of the ones that had rather poor reception came in much better. We bought an Apex Converter which allow pass through of an analog signal if needed. I am working to get this TV hooked up to an outside antenna so see what else is out there.

RE: Hitch came loose...

I guess that I could have been a little clearer in my description. First of all let me explain that when I bought the hitch it did not come with any clips for the ends of the pins, and being the observant fool that I am I never gave it a thought. I bought some luggage locks that fit in the grooves of the pins. I bought the locks because I read (in this forum) about people having their pins pulled out as a prank and I did not want that to happen to me. When I say the pins were in backwards, I meant that I could not put the locks on because the end with the groove was under the hitch and I could not easily reach them. When the grooved ends point toward the front of the truck for the front pins and toward the rear for the rear pins it is easy to clip on the locks. In hindsight (I have great hindsight by the way) I should have noticed the grooves in the pins and went back to the dealer and asked where the locking devices were. We were indeed lucky, the trailer could have broken loose or we could have rolled over since I was executing a sharp turn at the time.

Hitch came loose...

A week or so ago I posted about my friend helping me to change a tire and install my hitch in the truck. Well, when he installed the hitch (it's a Reese 16K which mounts on two rails mounted in the truck bed) he installed the holding pins on the front rail backwards from what I normally do. This made it impossible to put my locks on the pins. Since I did not have these locks for the first 2-3 years I had the 5er I did'nt worry about it (bad decision). We started the trip and everything seemed O.K. until we decided to stop for lunch in Bakersfield. We pulled off the ramp and, at the bottom, when we started to merge with the traffic I felt the 5er sway/lean considerabley and there was a loud thumping noise. We pulled into the parking lot (at In and Out of course) and looked at the hitch and found the front pins (the ones I didn't bother to reinsert and lock) had come out and the front end of the hitch had come out of the mounting rail. At first it looked like the hitch had become warped and we could not get it reinstalled. I had to drop the trailer, dismantle the hitch and reinstall it. I couldn't get it to sit in the rail properly. I hooked up the trailer thinking that the hitch weight would force the hitch down into the rail....but it didn't. I finally gave my son a 3# hammer and told him to pound on the hitch to force it into position. That worked! By this time I was sweating like a... well let's just say that I was very, very hot and my back was hurting. I got in the truck and pulled around the corner to get gas and ran over something that blew my tire out (the one that my friend had switched for the spare). So I asked the gas station attendent if he could help me since I couldn't lift anything. He changed the tire and wouldn't take any payment for it. So if you're on hwy 99 heading into Bakersfield and you have to stop for gas. I reccomend the Texaco station that is next to the In and Out and across from Camping World. Very, very nice gentleman works there. P.S. The rest of the trip went with out a hitch (pun intended). ;)

RE: Transmission cooler needed?

Engineer9860, thanks for the reply. I always use the tow/haul mode. All it does however is change the shift points and much of the time when I'm towing in the mountains I'm in second gear. Thanks to the other replys also. I think that I'm going to take the truck in to my mechanic and have him check it out.

Transmission cooler needed?

We have a 2002 Chevy 2500 with the 6L engine and the 4.10 rear end. We have the towing package so the truck has a transmission cooler, but when we haul thru the mountains or up any long grade the transmission temperature eventually gets up to the red warning area. Our trailer weighs about 8k lbs. when fully loaded and the truck is rated to tow 10.4K lbs. so there is no problem with over loading. I have a friend that says I should not put a second cooler on the truck. I am concerned about the transmission fluid getting hot so often. Is there a problem with adding a second cooler in line with the current one?

RE: The almighty DUH....

As already stated, been there done that. It sort of makes you feel like you've slipped a few clogs in the mind's gears. How about when you try to drive off and you've forgotten to remove the wheel chocks. That's why I've added these things to my checklist.

Tire dressing....

Once the trailer is washed and waxed what do you put on the tires to make them look nice? I scrub my tires with Comet to get the road grime off and then they look very blah. I know that you are not suppose to use a petroleum based product, but that seems to be all that is out there.

It's good to have friends...

We are planning on camping in Yosemite with our son and his family next week. On Monday of this week I hurt my back and spent the next 3 days in the hospital trying to get well enough to walk. I got out Weds. and some friends stopped by to ask what they could do to help us get the 5er ready for the trip. I needed to swap one of the tires and the spare and to install the hitch in the truck. My friend came over this morning and did both for me. I'm very, very thankful that we have friends like that. I was afraid that if I had tried to do these things I would have reinjured my back and we would have had to cancel the trip.

dumb or nieve?

I stopped by the Calif. DMV to pick up a handbook for my upcoming drivers test (first one in 15 years, that's what happens when you finally turn the big 70). While there I overheard a clerk asking test questions to a man who in turn asked them to a woman. Both the man and woman were speaking in a foreign language. After the man asked the woman the question and the woman replied the man then turned to the clerk and gave the answer. For all the clerk knew he was asking her if she was having a nice day and she was replying that it was too hot. The clerk just happily marked the answer down and moved on to the next question. It makes me a little nervous to know that there is a possibility that there is going to be someone on the road that can't read English and doesn't know or understand the rules.

RE: Fridge. problem

Our has an auto setting that will switch from gas to elect. when we hook up to electricity , or conversley, switch to gas when the electricity is removed. you can also set it to either gas or electricity and it will not switch. Maybe you have it in one of these positions.
